"Οι ρίζες της Jigsaw ως διδακτικής στρατηγικής τοποθετούνται στο 1971, στην περιοχή Αustin του Texas των Η.Π.Α. όπου και χρησιμοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην εκπαιδευτική πράξη από τον Elliot Aronson. Ο Elliot Aronson, ο οποίος ήταν τότε καθηγητής στο πανεπιστήμιο του Texas, σε συνεργασία με τους φοιτητές του, επινόησε τη συγκεκριμένη στρατηγική διδασκαλίας προκειμένου να αμβλύνει την εκρηκτική ατμόσφαιρα που είχε διαμορφωθεί λόγω της αναμόρφωσης των σχολείων της πόλης με στόχο την άρση των φυλετικών διαχωρισμών. Εξαιτίας της εν λόγω αναμόρφωσης Αφροαμερικανοί, Καυκασιανοί και Λατινοαμερικάνοι μαθητές είχαν τοποθετηθεί στην ίδια σχολική τάξη για πρώτη φορά.
